Sonic Youth/ICP/The Ex CD EP [Konkurrent]

Konkurrent's series of Fishtank collaborations spring from an inspired idea, but the results—including The Ex's previous swim in the 'Tank with Tortoise—haven't always been as successfully hotwired and fired-up as one might hope. This menage à trois, however, gives up the goods. Sonic Youth (here represented by Mssrs. Moore, Ranaldo, Shelley, Jim O'Rourke, and William Winant) links up with members of the Netherlands' ICP Orchestra (Ab Baars, Han Bennink, Wolter Wierbos) and The Ex (Luc & Terrie, um, Ex) to seriously rut, hump and groove in an orgy of free-jazz beat 'n' bleat luv. The scraping guitar skronk of the Sonic and Ex men makes a great complement to ICP's horny, screeching reeds: timbrally, both are scratchy and raw, but the peaks interlock nicely, like zippers ripping open and shut. And when Bennink, Shelley, and Winant get revved and rowdy on their drums, the whole affair becomes positively tawdry. Oh, yeah, it's good stuff, alright. Now is that enough shameless, blatantly sexual metaphor-slinging to seduce you? Or do I have to break out the words like unchained, imflamed, sweaty, incestuous, and European? [Konkurrent]
