TURN PALE Kill The Lights CD

Somewhat akin to the aesthetically pure and lamentably lost Love Life, Turn Pale takes a fresh approach to the hollow, dingy swamp blues of latter-era Birthday Party, the angular angst of Bauhaus and the frigid melody of Joy Division. And, despite the recent surge in like-influenced bands, this Bloomington, IN quartet has cool songs that don't sound like riffs and lines directly stolen from their influences. There's a degree of emotional intensity to the performances (particularly the vocalist's similarity to David Yow's raw-nerve wail in Scratch Acid) that make it worth repeated listens. [What Else]
