VARIOUS ARTISTS Hard-Headed Woman: A Celebration of Wanda Jackson CD

Groundbreaking rockabilly queen and former Elvis paramour, Wanda Jackson gets the tribute treatment courtesy of Bloodshot Records. and while their liner notes would have you believe that Ms. Jackson's rebellious nature was a precursor to punk rock is a bit of a stretch, it is possible that this very label paying homage would not be here today if it were not for the styling of Ms. Jackson.

There are several standout acts here delivering versions of Jackson's “songs” (about 1/3 were written by her) including the superb Carolyn Mark who, like Jackson, deserves more recognition than she receives. Neko Case, Robbie Fulks, and Wayne Hancock all contribute in their finest while Jackson protégée Rosie Flores shows the kids how it's done on “In The Middle of a Heartache.” The eerie and haunting delivery from Trailer Bride's Melissa Swingle gives “Fujiama Mama” an appropriate post-apocalyptic feel that lends a slight uneasiness to the track.

Like most tributes there are a few that don't hold up or are unforgettable and this tribute is far from immune, but I give Bloodshot credit for paying respect to someone who couldn't be more deserving. [Bloodshot]
