COBRA VERDE Copycat Killers CD

Copycat Killers is made for partying. If this were a live show, everyone in the audience would be doing body-shots off each other and yelling “Wa-hoo!” and 50% would do a walk-of-shame the next morning. And all that might still happen if you played this CD at home for assembled peeps. Lord only knows what the consequences would be if you listened alone…

Cobra Verde is of course one of the most virulent, elegant rock bands around and have been for one long-ass time. Lead Singer Jon Petkovic is a classy yet puissant singer whose ability to strike an exactly right emotional pitch in a variety of stylistic modes is pretty well unmatched. He's mighty good at recruiting great band lines-ups too (one Cobra Verde having been stolen by Rob Pollard and serving as one of the finest incarnations of GBV ever). And the man's got excellent musical taste—diverse yet unerring in its attraction to excellence. To wit:

Copycat Killers is a passel of nicely off-the-wall selection of covers running the gamut from Pink to Hawkwind to Donna Summer to pre-Bowie Mott The Hoople. These are great tunes with stadium-sized hooks and lyrics notable for their unabashed exultancy, whether it be in praise of raw sex, hedonism, revolution et al. Cobra Verde handle 'em all with rough love. They clearly savor the compositions, resonating with the sentiments contained yet eager to add more muscle, wild energy and emotional abandon to the mix. This is especially apparent in their revving up of the machine-pop of “Get The Party Started” and “I Feel Love” but they even up the wattage on the Undertones' “Teenage Kicks” and Mott's “Rock N Roll Queen” and that's no mean feat!

If you‘re looking for heavy concepts this ain't the time or place. If you're looking for a soundtrack to jack yo' bad self up with when you're dressing for a long night out—look no fucking further. [Scat]
