TAPES 'N TAPES The Loon CD
The Loon is one of those perplexing records that has all the right ingredients, but just tastes bland and unimaginative. It's jittery, skittery and unpolished. A lot of its affect is stirring up curiously unfunky grooves, enlivening them with shouty choruses and spicing them up with abrupt structural shifts. It should work like gangbusters but somehow it all seems wholly premeditated, rote and studious. What's more, all the spiky points and sharp edges have been blunted, defanged, sanded down—or more likely were never extruded in the first place.
This is freak rock for preppies who're trying to graduate from John Mayer and Jack Johnson to the “harder stuff,” but are not quite ready for Animal Collective or Xiu Xiu. No doubt this is in heavy rotation at Urban Outfitters. [XL]
