Jana Hunter - Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom

JANA HUNTER Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom CD

The debut release from Devandra Banhart's label, Gnomesong is an aimless collection of songs from Jana Hunter who is associated with ‘Weird New America,' the psychedelic folk movement that includes Ariel Pink, Faun Fables, as well as Devandra Banhart himself. Initially, the title Blank Unstaring Heirs of Doom coupled with the intriguing, naïve artwork was immediately compelling, but inside the music falls short. Perhaps I missed the memo, but did lo-fi become the new psychedelic along the way? This is a collection of songs that plod and drag, her voice stays flat throughout, and the songs seem less like songs and more like lightly fleshed-out sketches, too lazy to put any real effort into. That's the issue I have with this record: While I understand that the ethereal, foggy gray hue of the material is intended to be dreamlike and otherworldly, it is instead ephemeral and forgettable.
