The Wingdale Community Singers CD review [Plain]

There's difficulty in taking The Wingdale Community Singers seriously when the members don't even consider themselves to be a band. The alleged one-off is made up of novelist, Rick Moody (The Ice Storm), David Grubbs (Squirrel Bait, Gastr Del Sol, Bastro), and Godspeed You Black Emperor collaborator Hannah Marcus. On paper this sounds like a potential disaster waiting to happen, but the three manage to pull it off by taking on an exploration in Americana rather than a Grubbs driven post-rock mind-fuck. This is an appreciation of all things Appalachian delivered with a modern perspective via the sweet sound of Hannah Marcus' voice. The only problem is that the music is pleasant without being memorable. There's nothing here that stands out or stands apart from what others have been doing with traditional music for the last fifteen years. If this was released with lesser know players would anyone care? No, not too likely... There are just too many bands doing far more interesting things for this to even matter, really. Nice, but not necessary. [Plain Recordings]
