WOODEN WAND AND THE SKY HIGH BAND Second Attention CD

Freak folk loner and stage-mutterer of plaintive complaints, James Toth may or may not have put out to pasture his previous outfit, the Vanishing Voice, but with the SHB he seems content to corral his roaming minstrel ballads into a far more accessible form. It's possibly that I'm genetically indisposed to this type of “leaves in my hair and mud under my toes” hippy frippery, but Toth seems rather one-note to me; his cadences and vocals don't vary much from track-to-track and at times one can't distinguish one song from the other. Sure, I do raise an eyebrow when some sweet solo comes soaring forth from the Sky Highs, but those nice moments only make me wish that they were more often and louder to cover Toth's limited range—For all you goddamned hipsters who read Arthur while sipping on your pre-biotic smoothies.
