FUCKED UP Hidden World CD

With lyrics that crib from Henry Darger paintings, songs about the controversial Process Church, and band members with names like 10,000 Marbles and Mustard Gas, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Fucked Up were just about anything but a hardcore band. But Fucked Up's unique brand of hardcore retains the style and immediacy of the floor punchers while showing a great deal of invention, adding marimba, organ, and violins in the mix, and manages not to sound like the clusterfuck it could easily be. The guitars occasionally come off very ‘classic rock' while the rhythm section and Billy-Milano-with-a-Bachelor's-Degree vocals belie a complete collection of Government Issue singles. Throughout Hidden World, the multifaceted approach of Fucked Up meshes together seamlessly, and that is precisely what makes the band so interesting to listen to. Befitting of their name, Fucked Up have created some very damaging, very creative music here. And I for one can't wait to see fifteen year old hardcore chicks pumping their fists and screaming along to lyrics like “Two globes divine synchronize the lobes / Vesica contained consonance attained.” Here's to having more fun in the new world.
