OF MONTREAL Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? CD
This review has been getting put off for about two months, but this morning I received the sad news that an old friend of mine, Ted Hafer—bass player from the early nineties band Porn Orchard—took his life jumping from a building. There is no real connection here other than the fact that Porn Orchard is from Athens, GA., which is also where Of Montreal hails from. I'd be willing to venture a guess that their paths crossed along the way. Athens is a small town. I cannot think of two bands more diametrically opposed musically than Porn Orchard and Of Montreal, but for both there is an intelligence and complexity, an element that seems to permeate many of the bands that have come from the fertile musical soil of that town.
Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? Is an indie-rock explosion of sunshine-laced singalong pop, a little too twee and preciously bouncy for me to fully embrace at times, while other times (when my dour nature takes a rest) is undeniable, irresistable and charming. It's an odd mix of electro-pop, psychedelia, sugar-coated melodicism, and manic energy. The record is a Fruit Loops-infused party with Beach Boy overtones, an animated and effervescent romp jacked up and high on cocaine and caffeine.
If indie rock had a candy-raver contingent, Of Montreal would be the flagship band. [Polyvinyl]
