Bettye LaVette - The Scene of the Crime

BETTYE LAVETTE The Scene of The Crime CD

What's good: Nancy Sinatra steps up with dubious but seasoned jammers like Jon Spencer, Calexico, Sonic Youth, and Steve Van Zandt a few years back. So the results weren't great, but just the version of “Bang Bang” was fine enough to sate.

What's really bad: An ageing but credible blues/soul crooner doing a batch of tunes that almost any choir girl could do. And if she had enough dough, she could hire…Sonic Youth, Caliexico, and any other uncritically acclaimed, Spin magazine house band. Instead, she chose the Drive by Truckers, a pedestrian outfit clutching in a most mercenary fashion at the brass ring. Hey, Rolling Stone likes 'em, might move a few units. [Anti]
