THE WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY Addicted to Bad Ideas CD

Looking at this CD and the band's self-description, I had hopes for this one: A “punk-rock orchestra” with a Weimar-era Berlin feel; it sounded like it could be a cool global mash-up a la Gogol Bordello. I was wrong. This sounds more like the soundtrack to a musical your mom might find hip and edgy. There's definitely a lot going on here, the instrumentation is all over the place (tuba anyone?), but unfortunately it's all smothered in a thick layer of cheese. The lyrics name-check morphine, anarchists, etc., while a Disney version of “alternative” music whales away in the background. Ugh. There's probably an audience for this somewhere, but I really don't want to think about who they might be. [Chunksaah]
