Murder By Death - Red of Tooth and Claw

MURDER BY DEATH Red of Tooth and Claw CD

Laudable stab at roots-based country-tinged grind from these Indiana-based lads, who come off more slick and stripped than in previous outings. Nothing to bring down the house, but the opener, “Comin' Home” is a thick bash-'em-up that I could see hitting the local twang radio show. “Fuego!” takes cues from some Mike Ness-isms, simultaneously morose and moody and angry. These are well-spun tales of desperation, but there's just that tiny snatch of retread that backs a listener off as just too familiar. Perhaps if they widened the sound just a little, give us some rougher guitar textures to make that strong voice push it a little harder. And we look forward to the next one. [Vagrant]
