Scrabbel - Homemade Hits, Vol. 2

VARIOUS ARTISTS Homemade Hits Vol. 2 x CD

The offerings comprising Homemade Hits Vol. 2 are overall as gosh-darnedly cute as a lacrosse field covered in hand sewn Hello Kitty pillows. The common threads are: an obtrusive affection for 80's new wave icons—echoes of everyone from New Order to Dinosaur Jr. to Fad Gadget abound. In keeping with that, all the artists have a predisposition for shaping peppy, tuneful songs, singing sweet-if-short melody lines and fashioning distinctive instrumental hooks.

They have all been faithful to the underlying conceit of the collection and even though  Pro-Tools puts big studio polish in the hands of every ambitious trust-fund baby looking to be a MySpace star, these performances are spit out rough-hewn, trailing manifold rough edges—an integral part of their charm.

If you were hosting an 80's nostalgia bash and wanted to out-hip your attendees you could likely fob this off as a mix tape of Bit Torrent-ed outtakes from that era's heroes. [Kittridge]
