Dengue Fever - Venus On Earth

DENGUE FEVER Venus on Earth CD

I just don't get this one—must be me. Plenty o' media outlets have given generous editorial space and many kind words to Dengue Fever so clearly this unit strikes some folks the right way but what I hear is nothing more than cute shtick. Vocalist Chhom Nimol is merely a passable singer who appears to be getting by on her heavy (no doubt authentic) accent.  Meanwhile the accompanying music is a nothing beyond a vague, if able take on a number of retro stylistic clichés including stock lounge and sorta trancey psychedelia. No doubt this functions as prime atmosphere in hip and seedy L.A. bars and ain't no harm in that, girl, and f you own such an establishment or seek to recreate that vibe I recommend this unreservedly to you.
