Bison b.c. - Quiet Earth

BISON B.C. Quiet Earth CD/LP

Bison B.C.'s debut album isn't easy to assign into one of the many metal pigeon holes. It's alternately speedy and doomy, fuzzy and sharp. But these Canucks bring very little unnecessary flash, so workmanlike might be the best descriptor. The disc starts off great, my head was bobbing and the first two songs went by in a happy and heavy flash. But the quality varies a bit after that. When the band catches a nice groove, their unpretentious “down-tune and go” style demands respect. But the longer songs tend to drag, and too many of their tempo shifts feel forced if not particularly well thought-out. On the whole, I liked it, but I didn't love it. There's about a half-dozen “Fuck Yeah” moments scattered throughout, but I require ten to give an unreserved thumbs up. [Metal Blade]
