THE PARTING GIFTS Strychnine Dandelion CD/LP

Anything that Greg “Oblivian” Cartwright touches is an easy sell and The Parting Gifts is no exception. This time around Cartwright is paired with Coco Hames from The Ettes and supported by a handful of guests that include The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and The Raconteurs’ Patrick Keeler. Strychnine Dandelion finds Cartwright and Hames sharing vocal duties on fifteen, mostly original, tracks that include the standout duet “Bound To Let Me Down” as well as a cover of The Rolling Stones “(Walkin’ Thru The) Sleepy City.” As expected, it’s a rock-n-roll affair bolstered by Cartwright’s beguiling Memphis soul delivery. With the exception of the five tracks that feature Hames on vocals, the whole affair doesn’t deviate much from Reigning Sound territory and that’s never a bad thing. Those tracks that do feature Hames mix it up and run from the rave-up “Don’t Stop” to the countrified “This House Ain’t A Home” helping to make Strychnine Dendelion a must have. [In The Red]
